Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe

SeaAngel logo development
The brief :

The challenge, with tight deadlines, was to devise a logo which complemented and indeed strengthened the already strong Mitsubishi branding. Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe was planning the launch of the prototype of what was likely to be the world’s largest offshore wind turbine, SeaAngel. They planned to unveil SeaAngel at the EWEA Offshore Wind conference in Amsterdam, with initial prototype-testing scheduled to begin in 2012.

Our solution:

Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe has recently launched the prototype of what is likely to be the world’s largest offshore wind turbine. SeaAngel was unveiled at the EWEA Offshore Wind conference in Amsterdam, with initial prototype-testing scheduled to begin next year.

The SeaAngel logo, designed by Caboo, will be used on the turbines and so we can confidently claim that this is the biggest job (size-wise) that we have ever done. Meanwhile we designed and produced the graphics and the panels for the SeaAngel stand at the conference.

The challenge for us, apart of course from the tight deadlines, was to devise a logo which complemented and indeed strengthened the already strong Mitsubishi branding. We worked with the Mitsubishi team in London and with head office in Japan, gradually evolving a design which works with existing branding and which works  just as effectively when it is used large (very large) as when it is used small.

Mitsubishi claim that SeaAngel is ‘game-changing’, using unique hydraulic technology, developed in Scotland.

Royal College of Ophthalmologists: quarterly newsletter

The brief :

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists is one of the smaller medical royal colleges but has an active membership. The aim of its quarterly newsletter is to capture the full range of the College’s activities, including appointments, events, awards and fellowships. It seeks to complement other forms of communication by providing a regular, hard copy bulletin which is well-illustrated and quick to read.

Our solution:

With copy and illustrations supplied by the College, we edit and produce this quarterly newsletter for which advertisements are sold by a third party. The publication has a good mix of material, with news items alongside conference reports, a regular historical piece and Focus, a clinical article. This is a long-standing contract for Caboo which is well received by members. It is redesigned from time to time to ensure it attunes with the image of the College.

Testimonial:

We have had a lengthy association with Caboo Desing. The team has been creative and intuitive. They re-designed our membership newsletter, which is one of our main means of communication, and they worked with us to produce a sensible but comprehensive style guide for contributors. We have been happy with the quality and their ability to meet deadlines.”

Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health: annual conference material

Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health: annual conference material
The brief :

Our task was to design the brand for the annual conference of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, including the 32-page programme, exhibition guide, sponsorship brochure, poster and adverts promoting the event. Consideration was to be given to the venue, delegates and the theme of the conference. The new RCPCH logo had to work confidently with the design.

Our solution:

Using the new RCPCH colours and a selection of strong photos, we designed a clear and functional solution which used a colour-coded system to highlight each day of the conference, making it easy for delegates to navigate and find the information quickly. Tight deadlines and last minute changes added to the pressure!

Testimonial:

“I regard Caboo Design as one of the best companies of its kind I’ve worked with.”

Healthcare People Management Association: corporate identity(2002-present)

Healthcare People Management Association: corporate identity(2002-present)
The brief :

The Healthcare People Management Association, a UK-wide membership association for people in NHS human resources, has had several changes of name and so had developed a rather confused identity. As an organisation with limited resources, it needed to punch above its weight. A strong brand and an effective website were needed to equip the organisation for a new era.

Our solution:

This striking logo in shocking pink has served to give HPMA a much sharper identity. We worked with an open source specialist to deliver better membership communication for the association within limited budgets. The logo has worked brilliantly across print, web, event materials, exhibition stands, give-aways and in many other ways.

Testimonial:

"Over the last few months we have been revamping Network as the main form of communication with our membership. We wanted to radically overhaul the content and look and feel of the publication. Caboo have done an outstanding job in working with me to develop a product that really does reflect what HPMA is about."

International Council of Nurses:

International Council of Nurses: counterfeit medicine awareness campaign
counterfeit medicine awareness campaign
The brief :

With our experience of international campaigns, we were invited to create a public awareness campaign for The World Health Professions Alliance and the ICN to highlight the problem of counterfeit and sub-standard medicine worldwide. This needed to have a truly global reach, communicating with professionals throughout the world whatever their healthcare setting.

Our solution:

We developed a brand that was culturally and ethnically neutral and applied it to a wide range of information material including a press pack, information leaflets, response forms, checklists and posters. The various items were colour-coded featuring the brand and presented in a campaign pack folder.

Testimonial:

"The bold design helped us get across the serious issues relating to the campaign. The impact was fantastic, exactly what we wanted."

British Cardiac Society: annual report 2005-06

The brief :

A contemporary design was needed that reflected the image and the activities of the BCS. They wanted a fresh look for their report which was a key means of communication not only with members but with a wide range of other stakeholders.

Our solution:

We created an abstract design featuring simplified veins and arteries which ran through the report giving it a relevant, flowing cohesion. The design was very well received by the client.

The International Council of Nurses:

The International Council of Nurses: corporate identity
corporate identity
The brief :

The brief was to create a logo that was internationally recognisable as a symbol of health and wellbeing. We needed to be aware of the symbolic meaning of different colours in various cultures; and the logo needed to work in various formats and be as resistant as possible to ‘tinkering’. An additional challenge was that the title had to work in three languages.

Our solution:

We ran several focus groups with ICN staff, who were multi-national and so could point out the various cultural sensitivities. The logo is inspired by Florence Nightingale’s lamp with the flame as a symbol of learning and knowledge. The lamp also suggests outstretched arms to encapsulate caring. The whole logo suggests a globe, without resorting to the use of obvious clichés. It has stood the test of time and remains as vivid now as it did when it was launched.

Testimonial:

"A major project skilfully executed and thoughtfully undertaken, the new logo positioned us perfectly for our mission on the world stage."

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health: medicines for children

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health: medicines for children
The brief :

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health embarked on an ambitious project to create the first ever comprehensive formulary to guide doctors prescribing for children. This meant designing a publication which would be clear and easy to use. The aim was to regularise the prescribing of medicines to children, and to reduce the number of errors.

Our solution:

Working with their medicines committee and the neonatal and paediatric pharmacists group, we set a design style with easy to use tables, so that doctors and pharmacists could quickly and easily check dosages and side effects. We organised the indexing and co-ordinated the production of the whole project. With over 700 pages, it was a massive undertaking lasting over 12 months. Subsequently we produced a pocket version and the publication became mainstreamed when it was adopted by the BNF.

Testimonial:

"I regard Caboo Design as one of the best companies of its kind I’ve worked with."

The Royal College of Nursing: RCN bulletin

The Royal College of Nursing: RCN bulletin
The brief :

The Royal College of Nursing wanted to capture the excitement of its annual Congress and give delegates an accurate take-home record of debates, by producing a daily newspaper. The idea was that it would be ready for delegates to pick up each morning as they headed into the conference hall.

Our solution:

We designed, wrote, and produced a daily broadsheet throughout the congress. The news team wrote up the debates as they happened, and the pages were laid out with photographs and cartoons. The paper was printed overnight ready for delivery at 7am the next morning. We worked closely with the RCN’s communications team to ensure the coverage reflected their priorities.

We have also produced daily conference newspapers for the World Congress of Neurology (The Daily Nerve) and for The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Congress (The ISTH Times).

The International Council of Nurses:

The International Council of Nurses: conference branding
conference branding
The brief :

Always an exciting and challenging time! The brief is to illustrate the theme of the bi-ennial conference and at the same time have a visual link to the country hosting the conference. Previous conferences have been held in London, Taipei, Geneva, Yokohama, Durban and soon Valletta. The design must work with different cultural and ethnic groups throughout the world.

Our solution:

We now have an excellent track record of designing and producing the branding for each conference and the associated literature and signage, including: posters, call for abstracts, an 88-page programme, banners and adverts.

Testimonial:

"Once again, you have branded our conference in a creative, colourful manner, feedback from delegates around the world was very positive."

The International Council of Nurses:

The International Council of Nurses: international nurses day theme
international nurses day theme
The brief :

Each year we are asked by the International Council of Nurses to design the theme for this special day. Each year has a different message about a key healthcare issue, such as Nurses leading chronic care (2010), Safe staffing saves lives (2006) and Fighting AIDS stigma (2003). The design has to reflect the international aspect with particular attention to ethnic and gender groups, and have all the power required for campaigning materials.

Our solution:

We always ensure that the design is simple and easily interpreted by a varied audience. The images are striking, and are designed to work without words. The material (including posters, adverts and the brochure) is produced in several languages.

Testimonial:

"The interpretation of the brief for this potentially sensitive theme was very tastefully and intelligently illustrated."

Royal College of Midwives: celebrating achievement in midwifery

Royal College of Midwives: celebrating achievement in midwifery
The brief :

As organisers of the Royal College of Midwives annual awards, we needed to devise a striking theme to encourage midwives to take the time to submit an entry. It needed to dispel the myth that awards were other people’s business and project the idea: ‘What you do is special.’

Our solution:

Under the banner: ‘Are you a star of your profession?’ we took a film theme throughout all the branding. Without resorting to the cliché of the Oscars, we used photographs of midwives at work, newborn babies and previous winners receiving their awards dropped into the old-style film strip.

We received a record number of entries and the theme used in the awards presentation backdrop was powerful and inspiring.

The International Council of Nurses:

The International Council of Nurses: tuberculosis guide
tuberculosis guide
The brief :

We were invited to produce an information booklet for the International Council of Nurses (64 pages), to aid carers throughout the world by providing valuable information about the history, diagnosis and treatment of the various forms of TB.

Our solution:

The booklet was produced in three languages.

We also designed the logo and brochure for the ‘ICN-Lilly Award for Nursing Excellence in TB/MDR-TB’, which is a prestigious award recognising the dedicated services of specific individuals around the world in the treatment and care of TB patients.

Testimonial:

"This was a substantial and important document, your attention to detail was much appreciated. The finished document was very clear and easy to navigate."

General Chiropractor Council: launch materials

General Chiropractor Council: launch materials
The brief :

The Council was set up as a statutory body to regulate the chiropractor profession. One of its main tasks was to explain to the general public what a chiropractor does and how they could be assured of professional standards.

Our solution:

Among the various publications we produced for the council was a leaflet, in seven languages, setting out what to expect from a chiropractor. We produced a design which worked within the constraints of the different language styles; we managed the translation process; organised proofreading and chose the relevant typefaces.

Healthcare People Management Association: awards 2010

Healthcare People Management Association: awards 2010
The brief :

This multi-sponsored event had to deliver for the sponsors as well as members and that meant attracting a high number of high quality entries. We needed to produce material not only with strong HMPA branding but also with a distinctive theme so that this year’s awards would stand out. The branding needed to work across print and web formats.

Our solution:

The slogan ‘Get talent spotted’ was devised to appeal to the career ambitions of members and their teams, to remind them that talent could easily go unnoticed and that the HPMA awards were an excellent way of spreading good practice. The use of the Associations pink is a simple device to give identity to the awards materials. The slogan ‘Get talent spotted’ on the entry form grew into ‘Talent spotted’ in the compendium of winning entries. The 2010 awards achieved a record number of entries.

St Mary’s College, Durham: old boys 2011

St Mary’s College, Durham: old boys 2011
The brief :

This was a rush job as St Mary’s College, Durham had had a recent change in hockey club coordinators and the tickets for the Old Boys’ 2011 reunion had been overlooked. This was a new event, and therefore much was riding on setting the right standard. They had a high quality logo that we could use for the basis of the design. We were asked to come up with something that had gravitas, yet was clear and modern.

Our solution:

We redrew the basic logo and used it with the college hockey club colour behind it, combining that with clean typeface. One of the design team drew the hockey stick and ball image in Illustrator. Tickets were designed, approved, printed and delivered in 3 days. The client and the college principal were delighted with the outcome and were able to theme the dinner around the ticket design.

Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health: annual report(1997-present)

Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health: annual report (1997-2009
The brief :

Unlike previous reports where we had received quite detailed briefs, for this annual report we were invited to develop the concept ourselves. The client wanted a striking front cover which would make that year’s stand out from others. Budgets, as always, were tight.

Our solution:

For the cover we used a striking stock photo, which we modified to work the way we and our clients wanted it to. It was simple and powerful. The image in one go captured the idea that the organisation was child-focused and put children foremost in their work. Simultaneously it captured the College’s focus on education for its members and raising standards.

Testimonial:

"I regard Caboo Design as one of the best companies of its kind I’ve worked with."
